Planning ahead is essential for navigating busy seasons successfully. Waiting until June to figure out how to manage the summer is far too late. Ideally, you should start thinking about it in March or April. We decided midway through May that next year, we are taking May off. We even went as far as setting a reminder in our calendars for next year.
The goal is to anticipate busy periods and plan your workload accordingly. For instance, set aside specific months for relaxing and others for intensive work. This preemptive strategy will save you from the frenzied scramble that often accompanies busy seasons.
One of the key ways to manage your workload during busy seasons is delegation. As we discussed, delegating can be a game-changer. We have a virtual assistants, a podcast manager, and someone to help with emails and PR. If you find yourself overwhelmed, consider hiring help. An intern or college student looking for a summer job can be a cost-effective way to delegate tasks.
These helpers can take over a variety of responsibilities, from managing social media accounts to handling email marketing. Corry’s daughter, for instance, found a summer job assisting with childcare for a local business owner and working in her children’s clothing boutique. This not only benefits the employer but also provides resume-building experience for the intern.
The crucial part is identifying tasks that can be handed off, allowing you to focus on high-priority aspects of your business.
For business owners with children, finding time to work can be particularly challenging during the summer. One effective strategy is bartering and swapping childcare responsibilities with other parents. When Melissa was a wedding photographer, this method was a lifesaver. Now, her children are older, and while she humorously admits to letting the television babysit occasionally, the core idea is to create a support system that allows you to work without constant distractions.
In Corry’s household, she set clear expectations at the beginning of the summer. She would tell her kids that while we have many exciting plans, I could not entertain them all summer. They need to learn to keep themselves occupied, and she would give them tasks to help around the house. This teaches them responsibility and gives me the space to manage her work.
Despite the urge to fully immerse yourself in the relaxation that summer offers, it’s essential to continue planting seeds for your business. Whether you have children or not, it’s about building time within your schedule dedicated to essential business activities. If you neglect your business entirely during the summer, you’ll find yourself reaping nothing come fall.
Use the pockets of time you do have to engage in consistent business-building activities. Create social media posts, write email newsletters, and develop blog content. This continuous effort ensures that you remain top-of-mind for your clients, even during slower periods.
Taking June, July, and August off may seem enticing, but it will lead to struggles in the fall. The work you do now will bear fruit in the coming months. Remember, you reap what you sow, and consistency is key to maintaining a steady flow of business.
