We recently had the pleasure of being guests on the Podcast Babes show with Anne Claessen, and we unpacked a lot of insights about our podcasting journey that can benefit you.

Where it All Began

Anne kicked off our chat by diving straight into how we started The Business Reboot podcast. It’s hard to believe, but our podcast is just turning two years old. We have both been in the entrepreneurial world for about 20 years. The podcast idea stemmed from a playful disagreement over the best type of long-form content to create for our business. Melissa, tired of blogging, was adamant about starting a podcast. I, on the other hand, was more apprehensive. What won me over? Melissa’s enthusiasm and that simple, freeing mantra: YOLO, let’s do this!

Why Consistency is Key

One of the biggest lessons we shared with Anne and her audience was about the importance of consistency. You see, many podcasts fizzle out after just seven episodes. We had read about this statistic, and in our classic overachieving nature, we defied it by launching with eight episodes instead of just one. Today, we are over 100 episodes strong and have never missed a weekly episode.

Our secret sauce? Treating podcasting as a key part of our weekly workflow. The topics for our episodes arise naturally from our coaching experiences, articles we write, and even random events in our lives. As we mentioned in the episode, if five people are asking about something, chances are 500 more want to know about it too!

More Than Just Leads

A point Anne brought up, which we clarified, is the role of our podcast in lead generation. Although we don’t have clients coming to us solely based on discovering our podcast, its value as a lead nurturing tool is immense. Our episodes act as a comprehensive guide showcasing our expertise and coaching style. They make people feel ‘at home’ and help build a level of trust that is hard to achieve through other mediums.

Our podcast is part of a broader marketing framework, working cohesively with our social media, email marketing, and even Pinterest strategies. It has become a valuable resource for our existing clients, strengthening relationships and proving beneficial on a long-term basis.

Evolution and Growth

Anne was curious to know if anything had changed from our initial episodes to now. The answer is a resounding yes. Two years ago, we were still figuring out our voices, both literally and metaphorically. We’ve refined our mission and become more comfortable with who we are as hosts. This evolution has fostered a deeper connection with our listeners who have journeyed with us through these changes.

Team Dynamics and Effective Co-Hosting

Hosting a podcast as a duo can seem daunting, but our partnership makes it effortless. We’ve developed an almost telepathic ability to navigate conversations together. We split tasks based on our strengths and regularly check in to ensure we’re aligned in our vision and content. Special shout-out to Melissa for always bringing the humor that keeps our episodes lively!

For those considering co-hosting a podcast, our advice is simple: practice, communicate effectively, and stay true to yourselves. The trust and chemistry between co-hosts can transform an ordinary podcast into something truly special.

Realness Above All

One of the core elements we highlighted is our commitment to being authentic. Whether we’re sharing business tips, personal stories, or a good laugh, we strive to be genuine. Authenticity not only makes our work more enjoyable but also resonates deeply with our audience.

Anne found it interesting that despite our extensive podcasting, we never list ‘podcaster’ as a primary role. That’s simply because it’s become such an integral part of our lives, it feels less like a job and more like an ongoing conversation with our community.

Our conversation on Podcast Babes reaffirmed many things about our journey. Podcasting is a powerful tool when done consistently and authentically. It’s not just a lead generator but a meaningful channel to nurture and build trust with your audience. If you’re thinking about starting a podcast, remember: It’s not about having all the answers when you begin but being open to evolving and refining along the way.

Thank you for joining us on this journey, and happy podcasting!
